The Cape Gets a
Public Rose Garden |
|
Cape Cod, Massachusetts is a popular vacation spot for thousands of tourists every year. Members of the Lower Cape Rose Society wanted to share their love of roses with the many people living or visiting this northeast peninsula thirty miles out in the Atlantic Ocean where there is no public rose garden. The Lower Cape Rose Society holds monthly meetings at the newly established community center, and a rose garden at the center would be the perfect educational tool to reach the rose-loving public and also thank the community for the generosity they have shown to our club. The hard work of the members of the Lower Cape Rose Society saw the fulfillment of their dreams. Roses in bloom at the new Harwich Community Center! Town officials were contacted, the project was approved, and letters to rose companies were written. Removing the grass, rototilling the soil, adding amendments, and finally planting the over four-hundred roses was all done in a matter of weeks. |

| A planting demonstration was publicized through the many available media sources in the area, attracting many curious rose lovers. Our rose show was held at the center this year, with over four hundred in- bloom plants greeting our visitors. The Yankee District Rose Show will be held on September 8th in Harwich, and the Lower Cape Rose Society looks forward to meeting other members of the Yankee District, as well as many visitors to our Cape community. Plans are underway to have our Town of Harwich designated a Rose City to celebrate 2002 The Year of the Rose. | |
